I must begin by explaining the difference between hobby and passion. A lot of people Including myself at one point confuse the two. Passion is a strong desire or devotion to something while hobby on the other hand is an action done often or regularly for contentment. Something I hear often is "I don't have a passion, I'm not good at anything." I also hear "I don't have any hobbies," or "I can't think of anything that I enjoy doing on my free time." Let me be the one to say that every human being alive has a hobby & I also believe that everyone is passionate about s o m e t h i n g. People don't realize that passion isn't always in physical form it can be an effect. For example, some people may have a passion for clothing and makeup while others might have a passion for helping people. As you can see fashion and makeup is the physical form while helping others is an effect. The confusion comes when people think that their passion comes from their hobbies. Don't get me wrong, yes, hobbies can lead to passions but that's not always the case. Just because you enjoy doing something on your free time doesn't necessarily mean that you are passionate about it. For example, I confused one of my hobbies for a passion. I love photography and film so much! I have made a couple promo videos for my modeling team and I even have my own youtube channel to film and edit videos. I love making youtube videos to help other people with makeup and life, I love to take pictures and filming when I can. Editing is actually my favorite part because that is where I am able to really utilize my creativity in an unique way. At one point, I was forcing myself to believe that because I enjoyed doing it, it was my passion and it was something that I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I even said I wanted to go get my masters in film production to be a film producer. I quickly realized that because I enjoy it on my free time and it's not something that I feel completely passionate about & it's just a hobby to me. Hobbies give us satisfaction and pleasure but there are times where we can go weeks, months or longer without thinking about it or doing it. That doesn't mean that I don't engage myself in it. I even got an internship Fall 2017 as a video production manager! Crazy right? I always keep my options open but am always honest with myself. Passion on the other hand is a feeling and a strong feeling or emotion. It's something that we are always thinking about and something that is constantly consuming you. Creating is my passion. Makeup is my passion. Leading is also my passion. I find myself always thinking about creating something, whether is be a graphic design, a visual, a makeup look, filming a new video, whatever I can create using my creativity. Makeup is also my passion because there isn't a day where I don't think about makeup and the art and magic of it. If I'm not physically doing makeup on myself or other people you can find me watching beauty youtube videos, reading/educating myself on makeup artistry, trends, new products and so much more. Lastly, leading is one of my biggest passions and it tops them all. I have always been a leader growing up. I possessed the qualities of an effective leader which include confidence, transparency, positivity, commitment, humility, organized, strategic, cooperation, focus and always having a vision. I haven't always been my best at these qualities but since I had a passion to be a leader, I had a strong devotion to improve them through experience and growing. My passions have shown me what I want to do with the rest of my life. I want to be a leader, I want to be a creative director and hopefully one day for a makeup company. You never know where this will lead me which is why I keep my options open. Maybe one day my creative directing will be taken to print, maybe even film! who knows right? Trust the journey and go with the flow. One thing I want to stress heavily is that passion alone will not always lead to your career choice and it doesn't guarantee success. How and where you direct your passion is what matters the most. The advantage of being passionate is that it makes it a lot easier for us to stay focused, dedicated and strive to improve the skills and qualities needed to be successful in it; and to potentially turn it into a career. Advice to anyone seeking their passion: Try new things: Try new things! You never know what you are going to like or enjoy unless you try them for yourself. Don't force it though, if you feel it's not 100% for you then try something else. Test the water! Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone because you may never know where it will lead you. Focus on yourself ONLY: Please please please focus on yourself. You will NOT find your passion or yourself through others. Stop comparing yourself to other people. Your life is your life. You have your own path and timeline. Follow your heart: Don't follow your mind follow your heart. The mind is a battlefield and thats facts. Following what you are thinking can be so deceiving and take you in wrong directions. Follow the path where your heart takes you because that will lead to true happiness. Do not fear, take a leap of faith: You will miss a lot of opportunities and blessings when you let fear take control. Accept the fact that you will fail along the way. Failure is key to success. It humbles you, teaches you and should motivate you to go harder. Success will follow if you handle failure the right way and trust and believe that it will. You have time: We don't have to have everything figured out by a certain point in our lives. Like I said everyone has their own timeline. Be patient with yourself, don't work yourself up trying to figure out what you are passionate about or what you want to do with your life. It took me senior year in college to finally realize what I want to do with my career. I knew what I wanted to major in but I didn't know what I wanted to do. I still don't have it completely figured out but I am going with the flow because I have time. Be okay with the fact that everyone will not "get" or "understand" you: You don't need to explain and justify your goals, actions, dreams all the time. Especially, to people who probably could care less or even worse people who want to see you fail, people who see your weaknesses. Surround yourself with people who support and motivate you while you figure things out. I know this was a lot of information but I encourage everyone to realize that you have a purpose. You are all talented, skillful, different in your own way. Know the difference between hobbies and passions and if you find yourself having trouble finding your passion or yourself take some advice and try for yourself. If it doesn't personally work for you just know you will figure it out as long as you believe and trust that you will. Leave a comment or your thoughts below. As you all may or may not know, I have a youtube channel "ajahlexi" which was previously named "GurlwithCurlz" that I started my freshmen year in college. For awhile now, I have been struggling trying to figure out ways to revamp my channel. One thing I've noticed is that as humans we have such a short attention span. I have been feeling like that fact alone has been forcing me to speed through the process of my videos, miss important information and not get my messages across clearly in my videos. I also have given advice on my channel, and I have mentioned forever about doing more life related videos but I am still trying to figure it out what I really want to do. Let me be honest sometimes I'm not 100% comfortable on camera talking certain things in life because one, I am an emotional person, I always have a lot to say (which causes videos to be super long,) and I once again always seem to miss information or forget to express everything clearly on the video. So, I've been thinking of ways that I can make shorter videos by still getting all the information I want in them. I've been thinking of ways to incorporate life into my channel uniquely. I want to do it in a way that's best for me and my comfortability. As busy of a woman as I am, I don't have time to film all day so my time is usually limited. I find myself missing important information which causes me not to post as often because the video isn't to my expectations so, I end up throwing it away like it never happened. As you can see that can cause a lot of wasted time and frustration . I haven't given up though.
